Description:

The Welles Juice Press (also known as the Peoples Juice Press) extracts juice containing high levels of nutrients from fruit and vegetables by pressing (squeezing) pulp. The nutrients and juice are forced out of the pulp fibers when pressed using 2 tons of pressure. The pressure exerted by this pressing method is thought to release extra nutrients and enzymes that would otherwise 'adhere' to the pulp and left behind by juicing machines. The Welles is made from white powder-coated steel and has a stainless steel splash plate. The drip tray is made of a specialized non-leaching plastic designed for use with foods. This is a manual juice press that works by placing the fruit and vegetable pulp from a juice extracting machine, such as Samson 6-1 or Green Power KPE, juicers. You can use left over pulp for the juicing process or just us the juicer to make pulp with the appropriate attachment. The pulp is placed into a pressing cloth, 2 are supplied with the Welles Press, the cloth is folded and placed on the drip tray. The tray is raised using the jack handle, pressing the clothe between the juicing plate and the drip tray.. When the pressing cloth containing the pulp is squeezed between the tray and the pressing plate the juice and nutrients are extracted from the pulp and flow off the drip tray into a bowl or other catcher (not included). You can also use the Welles Press with whole produce such as grapes by placing them directly into the pressing cloth. Cleaning the Welles - Peoples Juice Press is simple, just slide the tray out along with the press plate and rinse it in warm water. Rinse the pressing cloth and store it in the freezer to keep it sterile.... Pressing Reclaims Lost Nutrients from Vegetable Pulp - The pulp from organic vegetables is too valuable to be discarded. Pressing actually releases vitamins, minerals and enzymes that literally "bind" to the pulp. The hydraulic press separates the bio-available nutrients that act as powerful hea

5Excellent alternative to the NorwalkOct 01, 2010
By Trevor L. Hinson "Trevor"
The Welles' Peoples Press, if used in conjunction with a juicer/grinder (i.e. a Champion juicer), is a great alternative to the Norwalk juicer. Norwalk juicers cost $2500 new, and this press with a Champion costs under $700. The juice is perfect - pulp free, great color, no oxidation, with all the nutrients and enzymes in tact. Using a press provides the highest amount of juice extraction possible, and it leaves the pulp bone dry and with a slight loss of pigmentation.

If you want the best juice possible, or are on the Gerson therapy, and cannot afford the high price of a Norwalk, this is the next best thing.

The only downside to this is that a reasonable amount of strength is required to press the juice. If you have a disease or condition that prevents you from any form of physical excursion, the Peoples Press may not be a good fit for you.

Clean up simple, quick, and easy. I love this press and use it everyday.

5READ THIS BEFORE USING YOUR PRESS!Sep 10, 2011
By Odile S. Brock "Small stuff"
This is the most affordable press I could find online (a very similar one costs over $2K and is apparently heavily marketed to cancer patients). It works like a car jack, you pump a lever that raises a platform fitted with a juice catcher until it presses against a fixed plate. One reviewer gave it a 1 star (worst) review, and the first time I tried the press, I wholeheartedly agreed! BUT... I found a solution. If you buy one, read this BEFORE YOU EVER USE YOUR PRESS!
The big problem is that there is no easy way to get the platform back down after you've jacked it up and pressed out the juice. Instructions say, go ahead, don't hesitate to use force to push it down. Great. Thanks. There is absolutely nothing to grab hold of! Only fingernails fit in the narrow space between the juice catcher and the top plate, the juice catcher is plastic (so you do hesitate to apply force), and the pressed cloth with the residue are in the way of anything else you might want to try to wedge in. You get two cloths with the press, so you don't want to damage one of them the very first time you use it. My fingernails took a beating that night. One hundredth of a millimeter at a time, I nudged the platform down. It felt like it wasn't going down at all. IT TOOK ME OVER AN HOUR to get the contraption far down enough to be able to remove the bag and residue. Then I wedged a screwdriver wrapped in a kitchen glove into the space. After that it came down pretty fast. Oh, boy was I sorry I'd bought that thing! Only buyer pride (and anger) kept me going. I went to bed two hours after everyone - had to finish cleaning up. During the night, I came up with a solution.

SOLUTION: Cut a piece of cotton cloth (an old pillowcase is just right) into a 20 inch square. Fold it in three. Before you place the juice catcher on the platform, drape the folded cloth across the platform so that the long ends hang down on the right and left of the platform. This will give you something to hold on to. BEFORE YOUR FIRST PRESSING, practice jacking up the platform (NOT ALL THE WAY UP!), turning the release knob a 3/4 turn, and pulling the platform back down. Turn the knob back, jack up. Repeat until you are confident that you'll be able to get the platform down. You won't have a sticky mess to deal with while you practice.

The juice catcher holds the fabric in place. The instructions say this stiff release gets better over time, well, mine is still pretty stiff and I will always use the cloth. Can't see any reason not to.

The instructions are pretty badly written, but do read them, so you'll know not to turn the release knob too much. I find that 3/4 of a turn is enough. You can hear a "sigh" when the hydraulic pressure is released.

See a photo of my press at [...]. And recipes.

CONCLUSION: Not sorry I bought it now. The press is otherwise easy to use and does a great job.

RECOMMENDATION TO THE MANUFACTURERS: ADD HANDLES BELOW THE PLATFORM! Or, at least, add this solution to your instructions.

5squeezes blood from a turnipJun 28, 2011
By Elizabeth Shapiro "twas ever thus"
This is a godsend for people who cant afford a Norwalk Press. Just buy a champion, (used, for about a hundred bucks on craigslist)put in the blank screen and triturate your veggies like phase one of the Norwalk, and then run it through this. I have both systems, Norwalk and now, this, and this compares favorable. It is a little more time consuming as the Champion does not have quite the power and tube size of the norwalk, but hey, you are saving about 2000 bucks. The quality and taste are identical to that of Norwalk pressed juice, so there you have it.

5Great product, great customer service and very, very smooth juice.Apr 08, 2011
By D. Price "New_Follower"
I have nothing but good things to say about this product along with the manufacturer. The first unit I received did not keep the pressure applied to the pulp which resulted in little to no juice! It took a couple of phone calls but I did get a call back from the manufacturer and they took care of it right away. They sent me another unit along with a pre-paid slip to ship back the defective unit. Top notch customer service - I couldn't be happier from my experience with this manufacturer.

This unit looks a lot like the pictures and holy smokes does it apply the pressure! The unit I received has a couple of extra stainless steel thin sheets of metal about 3 inches high on the top of the left and right sides of the press, and I can see why. I've overloaded it once and having those thin sheets on each side help 'contain' the mess so to speak. Also, I found out the hard way that keeping the pressure applied to the pulp for an extended period of time produces a lot more juice. I had take the container of juice I was pressing and left the pressure on the pulp only to come back a minute or two later to a big puddle of juice under the press. It was a messy lesson but I was happy to learn it. I'm pretty sure the Norwalk doesn't allow this to be done.

In regards to the extra juice yield, the worst case scenario so far has shown a 12.5% increase in juice after pressing the juice that we've run through our Omega 8006. This was with mainly carrots, but when we use more fruit than veggies, we see an even higher % yield in terms of recovering the juice from the previously juiced pulp. When taking this into consideration with the price of organic fruit & vegetables, this thing will easily pay for itself within the first year! Take the low % yeild of 15% extra juice from previously juiced pulp, take an average of $75/week on organic fruits & vegetables and you're looking at saving $585 in the first year alone. Pretty tough to argue with that! I've even seen up to 30% extra yield when juicing only fruits as the juicer we have seems to do a much better job on leafy greens but leaves fruit pulp fairly wet. The more juice recovered from the previously juiced pulp, the more $ you save.

I've read other reviews that say it is difficult to get the tray to lower after releasing the pressure. First off, you only need to turn the release knob about a quarter to a half turn to loosen the pressure enough for the tray to be lowered. Second, equal pressure needs to be applied to the front and back of this unit and the tray will slide right on down. The most I've had to do is 'wiggle' the tray a little bit as I've pressed down on the juice plate and it sunk right down. To give this unit a one star review because someone couldn't figure this out...sheesh!

Combine this press with a decent slow RPM juicer and you've got yourself a juicing combination that, in my humble opinion, is superior to the Norwalk for two reasons. 1) The slow RPM juicers are generally accepted as 'superior' to the high RPM juicers and 2) This press gives you Two tons (4000 lbs) as opposed to Norwalk's 1 ton (2000 lbs.)

1Absolute JunkSep 15, 2010
By Brian G "Brian G"
this is the single biggest waste of $250 i'ver EVER spent!!!! this product is so poorly designed, it never worked even a single time, the tray wouldn't lower. the unit came already scratched up, the pieces are different colors, the instruction manual is printed off of a low quality bubble printer, it is Unbelievable!! the company i bought it from in Florida never returned a single call or email once i told them this thing didn't work, i'll update later with the name of the company, they were equally pathetic - i wish i would have called them prior to ordering, then i would have learned that their business phone is a personal cell phone that isn't answered unless you express an interest in purchasing something. whoever rated this piece of crap 5 stars is clearly selling it.

UPDATE - 3-29-2011 - I called the manufacturer/distributor, this is a genuine product - the pictures you see online are non-representative, the guy i talked to verified it with no apologies, just said that's how it is; not only that, when i told him that the tray didn't lower he said, "yeah, well" - "yeah, well", that's great service, thanks a lot - he said that you had to use force to pull the tray down, i told him that i did and it didn't lower, and he had absolutely no response to that, no offer to help, nothing. this product SUCKS - it is poorly designed, and if it doesn't work at all, like mine, you're not going to get any help. i love how someone selling this unit has asked me to take down or edit my post - to remove facts about the product and their customer service so they can continue selling junk that doesn't work and not servicing it, absolutely blows my mind. this machine has about $50 worth of parts and labor and people are now selling them for $400 - i can understand why he wants me to take the review down!
