Waited 2 years, recently bought this model 1782, excellent!Oct 23, 2011
By northkona On several occasions I saw the VitaMix demo'd at Costco, but I didn't spring for it, primarily because of the price. But neighbors have one, and they've made nut butters for me, which you can't do with a regular blender. My old bar-style blender bit the dust, so I needed a replacement quickly. I checked Cuisinart and KitchenAid models here at Amazon, and I read quite a few reviews, especially the one-star and two-star comments. I wanted to know what people didn't like, or what quality issues might be worth noting. Obviously Cuisinart and KitchenAid sell thousands of blenders to thousands of happy people, but I didn't like reading about leaking jars, motor problems, and returns. I encourage you to do a little reading about these products, including the VitaMix, before you buy. I think there may be a decline in manufacturing quality on some of the well-known brands. Basically with VitaMix, if something goes wrong, which is unlikely, they take care of it without delay. So ...
I decided to go ahead and spring for a VitaMix, and I saw that this newer model was available. Yes, it's pricey, but you can apply for an Amazon Store Card, and on a purchase this expensive there is a six-month interest-free option, so that makes buying one manageable for lots of people, including me. That's exactly how I paid for it.
It's a very powerful machine, it has a new lid on the jar which is more snug fitting. Not as noisy as my last blender, which was a real banshee screamer. The only thing I might criticize is the recipe book that comes with the unit is focused on fruity, sweet drinks. Well, that's fine, we all love that stuff, but the machine can do much more than make frappucinos. You can puree roasted eggplant to add to chicken stock for soup, you can make superb pasta sauces, pestos, and savory dips. This is a tool for people who like to cook and make things with fresh ingredients. If your needs are very basic, like a morning smoothie, you may not need this much power. I did laugh when I unpacked my unit and saw that it has a 3-prong plug, and a fairly sturdy cord. This is not your average kitchen blender! If the pocketbook will allow it, and if you are something of a foodie, I think it's a good investment, it'll likely last forever and expand your horizons in the kitchen. It sure has delighted me.

Just what I hoped it would be.Dec 08, 2011
By Lisa Dailey I have wanted a Vitamix for years, and finally was willing to spend the money to get one. I LOVE it- yes, it's tough to part with so much money for a blender, but there are things you can do with this that you can't even consider with a regular blender or food processor. It is just as powerful as the advertisements say it is, and really does completely liquify solid vegetables and fruit in just seconds.

Daughter loves itJan 02, 2012
By Maine Reflections Our 33-yo vegan daughter requested this for her only Christmas present, so a number of family members went in to get it for her, even though we were shocked at the price. The very first thing she did was grind some nuts to a powder which took just seconds, and made a couple of smoothies the first minute she got home. Then on New Year's Day she brought it back to our house again to make another smoothie and some Nutella from scratch (the regular stuff has dairy in it, she says). Taking into consideration all my feedback is secondhand, I would say she adores this machine. It is probably the first non-human thing she would save from a house fire, LOL! She says it is heavy-duty, fast, will do anything in seconds. My husband liked the 5-yr warranty too. Appears to be a phenomenal product!

Returned itMar 04, 2012

Let me preface this by saying that perhaps I am not the target audience for this blender. I use it solely for making a smoothie every morning for breakfast. I am not making nut butters, soups, ice cream or other things that I could use my very nice food processor to do.
I returned this primarily because it was emitting a burning smell when I blended (following the directions and trying different methods, believing that it might be just user error) which persisted past the number of uses when I was told by the customer service representatives that the smell would go away (something about the rubbers and oils were just burning away during the first few uses, which was supposedly normal). After a week and a half, using it to make a smoothie and then to clean it, I was still getting a strong, but fleeting burning smell, which for a $350 blender is unacceptable.
I am not going to simply exchange this for another one or send it in for repairs, however, for other reasons. Although I did feel that the overall blend was better than the blender I was attempting to replace, it didn't alter the taste and did not outweigh the downsides.
1) The pitcher is not dishwasher safe. That matters a lot to me because it makes it easier to get a thorough clean that you cannot simply get with just putting some soap and water in the blender and swirling it around for a minute (I will admit that because of the burning smell, I would only swirl it for 10 seconds at the most) 2) Another was that it doesn't lock on to the base - you simply rest it on the base and it has rubber feet on the base to keep it from sliding around too much. But even with the feet, if it is a little too thick (or during the cleaning cycle when it is just water) you have to hold it down. 3) It only has two speeds, high and low. For just making smoothies, it was not worth it to me to spring an extra $100 to get one with more variable speeds and options that you get with other Vitamix blenders. I thought initially that it wouldn't matter that it is two speeds, but it does. 4) It is really tall! After already dropping $350+ for a blender, dropping an additional $70 to get a pitcher that would allow the unit as a whole to fit under standard cabinetry was not something I was interested in pursuing.
As I've stated, however, perhaps I am not the target audience for this blender. If you are simply just making smoothies or other blended drinks, I would advise looking at other blenders. In the end I am just going to replace the blender that I have now that has an updated model that corrected some of the issues that were nuisances.
