Don't carry bubble water home from the store anymoreMay 12, 2010
By Chris Lunt Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RQ5U1HFYZIKTY I bought one of these, and this is my experience. I love it, we use it every other day. In the video I show how it works, and the pros and cons of the design.

Not such a gas.Feb 03, 2009

"Dinky Fink"
Sodastream Penguin Sparkling Water Maker I initially loved this clever soda maker, but have found that I have only been able to get about 1/4 of the number of carafes carbonated for each carbonator which is very frustrating, expensive and renders the entire operation somewhat pointless. I think there is a flaw with the design of the glass carafe which leads to loss of the CO2 each time a carafe is 'fizzed'. I have a friend with the less expensive model that uses plastic bottles and it seems to work much better and longer/carbonator. It is possible that there is something wrong with my unit, but I doubt it. The plastic bottles screw tightly to the carbonator nozzle and very little gas escapes. Also the small size of the carafe (620 ml) is a bit annoying.

Not like the other sodastreams!Dec 29, 2010
By Charlie's Mom Let me preface this by saying I am a big fan of SODASTREAM. I definitely think fresh bubbly water is a must have and it is terrific (both environmentally and otherwise) to lose the endless plastic bottles. That being said I will tell you our story. My brother in law bought the SODASTREAM Jet version with the plastic bottles this summer. We all used it in a beach house and were thrilled. I concur that the syrup is disgusting, but that is no matter. We use it strictly for bubbly water. As a mom with 3 young kids, I decided to spend more money and get the PEnguin because it uses glass bottles. I feel that the less plastic around, the better. However the Penguin is an enormous disappointment. I am sure that it will be modified and improved in the future...but I would tell anyone to purchase the cheaper, easier Jet in lieu of the expensive less functional Penguin. 1. The caps do not seal well. The fizz is gone quickly and when you tighten them they break easily. They are impossible to replace as apparently everyone breaks theirs and they have been backordered. There is absolutely no admonition in the packaging to beware and not over-tighten and the natural impulse is to do that when the fizz disappears so much more rapidly than other models. 2. The internal mechanism is unwieldy and wiggly and hard to manage. It sounds to all out ears as if a lot of gas leaks in there and that the internal seal is not tight. The plastic JET bottles screw on and it is clear they are much more efficient. There is a much higher cannister turnover and that means you are spending more money. It ends up being expensive, honestly. 3. The glass bottle is smaller than the plastic bottle and it is frustrating. On one hand this is actually good since it goes dead within an hour, but on the other hand you feel you have to fill up the bottle 3 times when a few adults have bubbly water to drink. 4. It is hard to tell about proper carbonation level. With the Jet model it was a buzzing sound and it was pretty easy to master. With the penguin it is a weird squeak. Someties it comes, sometimes it doesn't. It is completely impossible to master it and as a result it is easy to over carbonate or under carbonate. Then there is wasted gas and leakage. I TRULY WOULD DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM PURCHASING THIS MACHINE. It is a wobbly, peculiar disappointment. Get the plastic bottle model and you will be happy. The bubbly tastes FABULOUS! But the glass bottles and crummy seal are the pitts!

Perfect so far!Oct 25, 2009
By B. Seeman We go through about 2 large bottles of Pellegrino a day and I have long felt very guilty about the amount of bottles we must recycle as a result. When COSTCO stopped carrying cases of it, I started to question whether or not it was a sign that I should just give up the habit! We just bought an aquasana water filtering system and I decided I should be content with drinking this water all the time since it's so much better for the environment to do so (and I also question whether or not drinking so much carbonated water can be healthy, but that's another story). Then I happened upon this machine and decided to give it a go. I actually decided to purchase it from Williams Sonoma because they always stand behind any purchase I've ever made there, regardless of how long I've owned an item. I also confirmed with my local store that the gas chargers can be exchanged there and they give you a credit for the empty cartridge. We don't drink soda (pop) so I can't speak to how well this works for making that. Here are the pros I see thus far: -NOT made in China (made in Israel) -carafes are glass (no worrying about BPA, etc.) -the little lids for the carafes do an excellent job of keeping carbonation (much better than the Pellegrino caps) -you can adjust just how carbonated you want the water -very simple to use -no more recycling! Cons: -over 18 inches tall, so it doesn't fit well on our kitchen cabinets (but, it's very slender, so I was able to easily store it in a kitchen cabinet that I use for cookie sheets) -it's pretty loud when you release the pressure (but my pre-schooler thinks it's cool and sounds like a rocket ship!)

NO on saving money. Otherwise fineJun 03, 2010
By Jerryf Here's the deal. Yes, the product (Penguin in my case) turns out a great soda water. It is convenient and you can use spring water to further enhance flavor and natural water experience. HOWEVER, you will NOT save money and as noted elsewhere delivery of new canisters of CO2 is not timely. Here is how it works. You first buy another 2 canisters so that you have 4 (let's say). Use two of these and call for replacement and leave the empties outside your door.... They bill your credit card 15$ per cylinder plus 8$ for shipping = $38. Sometime later (up to three weeks) you get them back, and then the whole process can repeat itself. Careful notes indicate that you will get about 50 carafes of seltzer from each CO2 cylinder. Since each carafe holds .7 liters you are getting (.7 x 50)= 35 x 2(cylinders) = 70 liters of seltzer for 38$ or $38/70 = ~53 cents per liter. This price can be duplicated at most grocery stores with some careful shopping. Yes, there is a green value, and a convenience value, but NOT an investment value. Instead, consider using another source of CO2, there are many places to find out about this including Ebay etc. Alternate refilling brings the refill cost to about 3 cents per liter. Do your research and find the way that works best for you.
